Servicing Diesel Fuel Filters

Diesel fuel filters should be replaced at intervals recommended by the engine or equipment manufacturer.  Change filters more frequently under adverse conditions.  Thoroughly inspecct new filters for dents, never install a damaged filter.  The most common types of fuel filters are replaceable element and spin-on:

Element Type

~Drain fuel, water, and dirt from shell.
~Loosen bolt and remove shell and element
~Clean shell and base.  Dispose of element and gasket
~Install new gasket and seals.
~Inspect new filter.
~Re-install shell and element and check for leaks.

Spin-On Type

  • Remove old filter and gasket.
  • Clean filter mounting base.
  • Apply light film of clean engine oil to new gasket.  Do not use grease or diesel fuel!
  • Inspect new filter and fill with clean fuel to prevent loss of prime.
  • Thread new filter on until gasket contacts base, tighten according to instructions.
  • Start engine and check for leaks.

Clip-On Type

Clip-on fuel filters are very common in agricultural applications.  These filters also act as water separators.  A clean mounting base and proper bleeding of air are important when servicing this type of filter.
