How does a two-stage air filter work?
When used in the appropriate housing, incoming air is directed to the top of the fins.  The fins cause a swirling motion of the air and send large particles of dirt to collection area.  Smaller particles of dirt follow air to the pleated paper media and are trapped there.  Some housings are equipped with a vaculator and automatically eject dirt from the collection area.

Some housings use a safety or inner element for extreme conditions.  The main purpose of the inner element is to prevent dirt from entering the engine when servicing the primary element.  The inner element should be replaced every third primary replacement under normal conditions.  Do not clean inner elements, they should be replaced when they get dirty.

The DO'S and DONT'S of Air Filter Service!
Always do this:
  • Remove the old element as gently as possible.
  • Clean the inside of the housing carefully.
  • Clean the gasket sealing surfaces of the housing.
  • Check for uneven dirt patterns on your old element.
  • Press your fresh gasket to see if it springs back.
  • Make sure the gasket is seating properly
  • Check connections and ducts for air tight fit
  • Check inner element.
DON'T DO THIS:
  • Don't remove element for inspection only.
  • Never rap an element to clean it, only to destroy it.
  • Never judge your elements' life by looking at it.
  • Never leave an air cleaner open longer than necessary
  • Don't overlook a worn or damaged gasket in the housing
  • Don't use a dented filter element.
  • Never use a warped cover on a housing.
  • Never substitute an incorrect element model number
