What's the difference between a depth and surface oil filter?

The filter media in a surface type filter is pleated.  Virtually all contaminants in the oil are trapped on the surface of the paper.  The oil from the crank case enters the filter, flows over the surface of the media, and as it passes through the pores of the media, the contaminants are trapped on the surface.  Microscopic pores in the media permit the oil to flow through while trapping contaminants.

The filter media used in depth type filters is usually a controlled blend of selected cotton thread and resilient supporting fibers.  A migration barrier is created by wrapping the media around the center tube of the filter.  Unique blending and processing tehniques produce a precise filter media that does not pack or channel, and provides the flow requirements recommended by the engine or vehicle manufacturer.
